About Marathon Homeschool Mom

Joy Mehlhoff is Marathon Homeschool Mom. Starting out her homeschool journey in 1995, she has educated her five children and two adopted children ever since then. Six of her kids have graduated from homeschool and one is still at home!

A couple of her children had learning difficulties/disabilities which led her on a journey of research and learning how to help her kids navigate through muddy territory. She has become well-versed in reading pedagogy, learning styles, auditory processing disorder, Irlen Syndrome, and how trauma affects learning.

Always reading and willing to try new things, Joy is great at diving in and figuring out what works best for each child. She has a knack for looking at all angles of a child's education and learning experience and then trouble shooting.

Joy has used a wide variety of curriculums over the years and has even put together a literature history course for her family. She has a thorough understanding of the different approaches to learning and how every family is different!

For the first fifteen years of their homeschool journey, Joy used multiple types of curriculum and learning approaches. By looking at things at multiple angles, she is able to put different pieces together and create a successful package of learning for any family.

Ever since 2011, she and her children have learned how to thrive with Classical Conversations. She has tutored Foundations, Essentials, Challenge B (with her husband!), Challenge III and Challenge IV. With a thorough understanding of all of the levels of CC, she has come alongside many families and helped them scale Classical Conversations curriculum to fit their children and frame it to bring success.

She and her husband are still homeschooling one of their children. They live at home with him and their two dogs, Snoopy and Shakespeare. But a quiet house is rare because they invite their seven grandchildren to visit often!
